The “Your Voice. Your Choice.” Video Contest: Rallying Students to Raise their Voices with Help from a Homegrown Star

October 10, 2013

The Horizon Foundation recently announced the launch of the Your Voice. Your Choice. student video contest to allow local high school students (grades 9-12) to showcase their creativity while taking on big beverage companies, letting them know it’s time for better choices. In the short videos (produced entirely by the contestants), students are urged to shed light on the abundance of sugary drinks in their lives, share ideas as to why healthier drinks are harder to find, and most importantly, present their thoughts on how to solve the problem. The grand prize is a $10,000 award (for a team entry) or $3,000 (for individual entry). In addition, a special “Red Carpet” event will be held at The Horowitz Center Smith Theatre at Howard Community College, December 11, 2013, when the winning films will make their big screen debuts.

The contest is a natural extension of the Howard County. Unsweetened. mission, and we can’t wait to see the creativity of local students in action.

As if the contest wasn’t cause enough for excitement, we’ve got another bit of news to share:  Grammy Award nominated R&B singer, songwriter and actor Mario Barrett and his Mario Do Right Foundation (MDRF) are partnering with us to spread the word about the video contest and the HoCo Unsweetened campaign!

A Few Facts About Mario:

  • He grew up in Baltimore, Md., and still has close ties to the state.
  • He launched the Mario Do Right Foundation in 2007, a non-profit youth development organization with emphasis on substance abuse prevention. The organization provides education, awareness and support to children of addicted parents (COAP).
  • Not only is he helping the Horizon Foundation spread the word about Your Voice. Your Choice, but he will also be attending the “red carpet” awards ceremony in December!
Check out this video from Mario about the campaign:

We’re really excited to see where this partnership goes, and can’t wait to follow Mario and the MDRF as they help us get the word out. They’ll be posting about the contest on the sites and accounts below, so be sure to follow them there!

To help you stay up-to-date on the contest, we’ll be posting updates on the Your Voice. Your Choice. website, as well as here on the blog, and on Facebook and Twitter.

We hope you’ll help us spread the word about this great opportunity! Share with students you think may be interested and tell them to register now. Submissions are due by November 8th.
